Song-Kul is a mountain lake located in the Tian-Shan Mountain Range at an altitude of 3016 m. Song-Kul is used by the shepherds from the Kochkor, Naryn and At-Bashi regions as a jailoo - a pasture during the summer months. It is considered the pearl of Kyrgyz jailoos. The road to Song-Kul winds through mountainous terrain until it seems to disappear into the very sky itself. This is probably why Song-Kul is translated from Kyrgyz as the last lake.
The scene that greets you is surprising. The wide, brilliant, steel colored expanse of the lake appears majestic, quiet and transparent, looking like a huge bowl of pure mountain air surrounded by hills. Water and sky seem to meet here. Involuntarily, a parable from the history of Kyrgyzstan comes to mind: When the menacing Ormon Khan saw the lake for the first time in his life, he was fascinating by its beauty. Being very angry, he imposed a toll of forty rare thoroughbred horses on the tribe living by the lake because they had hidden such a miracle from him. The lake is 29 km long and about 18 km wide a maximum depth of 13.2 m. The water temperature in the summer is 11-12 C and, unlike Lake Issyk-Kul, it freezes over between November and May.

The surrounding of Song-Kul are completely untouched. Perhaps the most surprising fact is that around Song-Kul, you will never see a tree or even a shrub, but there a plenty of medicinal herbs and various flowers. Once the last snow melts, a broad swath of edelweiss a beautiful high-altitude mountain flower will bloom. From the end of May until August, you can see medicinal herbs such as chamomile, sagebrush, lichen, friars cap, and golden root. It is no surprise then, that this place has since ancient times been used as a summer pasture (jailoo). Several hundred sheep and horses graze here. As many as 66 species of waterfowl population to be found in Kyrgyzstan. From mid-May until the end of September, you can observe gulls, ducks (14 species) and cranes, black, white and dark-blue storks, mergansers, bald coots, plovers, falcons, golden eagles and shags. Besides, Song-Kul is the only place where the rare Indian mountain goose nests. This bird is protected by the State and listed in the Red Book.
